Abstract Forms by Joaquín Torres-García, 1929

Joaquín Torres-García loved grids so much he basically made them his signature style. In this 1929 piece, he arranges bold blocks of red, blue, white, and green within thick, heavy black lines, almost like a stained-glass window designed by a mathematician. Instead of aiming for perfect, machine-like precision like other Constructivists, Torres-García kept his brushstrokes visible and his background earthy and textured, giving the rigid geometry a warm, human touch. He believed these simple shapes and lines could connect art to the universe's underlying order, proving that math and soul can totally hang out together on the same canvas.
