Constructive Painting
1928
Joaquín Torres-García built a visual puzzle here, dividing the canvas into a strict grid where ancient symbols meet modern city life. On the left, stark white buildings spell out 'Hoy' (Today), while a brooding blue face stares out from the right, hovering above a bright red, train-like machine marked '6Ks.' This piece is a classic example of his 'Universal Constructivism,' a movement where he tried to create a universal language by mixing pre-Columbian geometry with modern industrial shapes. He famously believed the South should be 'up' on maps, and his grid-like compositions reflect his desire to bring order and structure to the chaotic modern world.
