Landscape with a High Cloudy Sky by Johan Christian Dahl, 1828

Johan Christian Dahl, a pioneer of Norwegian romanticism, was absolutely obsessed with the sky. In this 1828 landscape, the clouds steal the show, rolling in with dramatic, heavy brushstrokes that feel almost alive. While the foreground is dark and moody with silhouetted trees and resting boats, the middle ground bursts with sunlight hitting a quiet village. Dahl was good friends with the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich, and you can see that shared love for nature's sublime power here. He actually studied meteorology to paint clouds more accurately, making this less of a simple view and more of a scientific observation of the atmosphere!
