The Barracks at Pizzofalcone, Naples
1820
Norwegian artist Johan Christian Dahl traveled all the way to Italy to paint this moody scene, signing it right in the corner with the date October 22, 1820. He captures the Pizzofalcone barracks perched precariously on a cliff, overlooking the shimmering Bay of Naples under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. As a pioneer of Romantic landscape painting, Dahl loved contrasting the crumbling, static architecture of humans against the vast, changing power of nature and light.
