Phytanthoza iconographia Pl.161
1737-1745
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s lavish botanical encyclopedia, *Phytanthoza Iconographia*, was so expensive to produce that it reportedly bankrupted him! This plate showcases a colorful family reunion of crocus flowers, including the famous purple saffron crocus (top right) which yields the world's most expensive spice. The delicate hand-colored engravings were meant to help 18th-century gardeners identify species, from bright yellow spring crocuses to elegant white-striped varieties. It’s a beautiful snapshot of the era's obsession with cataloging nature's beauty.
