Boar Lane, Leeds by lamplight
1881
John Atkinson Grimshaw was absolutely obsessed with the magic of gaslight, and this 1881 view of Leeds proves it. The wet cobblestones act like a mirror, catching the warm, golden glow of the streetlamps and reflecting it right back at the viewer, while moody, teal-colored clouds hang heavily above the Victorian architecture. Grimshaw was a master of capturing the quiet, atmospheric moments of urban life just as the Industrial Revolution was changing everything, turning a simple rainy street into a glowing, cinematic scene.
