Una grande quercia by John Constable, c. 1801

John Constable was absolutely obsessed with the English countryside, and this massive oak tree shows exactly why. Drawn around 1801 during the Romantic movement, this sketch treats the tree like a living portrait, with its twisting branches reaching out like veins against the sky. Constable believed that painting was just another word for feeling, and you can really feel the rugged strength of this old giant in every stroke. Interestingly, while these were often just quick studies for larger paintings, today art lovers often prefer them for their raw, immediate energy.
