Hampstead Heath, olhando para Harrow
1821-1822
Constable was obsessed with the sky, once writing to a friend that it was the 'chief organ of sentiment' in his landscapes. Here, he captures the moody, shifting clouds over Hampstead Heath with rapid, energetic brushstrokes that make the atmosphere feel almost alive. He painted this outdoors to catch the fleeting light, a radical idea at the time when most artists worked safely in their studios. You can even spot a tiny figure in red at the bottom, giving us a sense of scale against that massive, brooding sky.
