Hampstead Heath, with Pond and Bathers
1821
John Constable was absolutely obsessed with the sky, once telling a friend that it was the 'chief organ of sentiment' in a landscape. You can see that passion exploding across this canvas, where dramatic, sweeping clouds dominate the scene over a peaceful London park. Down below, tiny figures splash around in a pond, completely dwarfed by the massive, brooding atmosphere above. As a key figure in Romanticism, Constable broke away from stiff, idealized landscapes to capture the raw, fleeting weather of the English countryside, changing how we look at nature forever.
