Passing off of the Storm
1872
John Frederick Kensett masterfully captures the serene aftermath of a tempest in this stunning example of American Luminism. Notice how the dark, heavy band of storm clouds is retreating, making way for a brilliant, glowing sky that reflects perfectly on the glassy water below. Kensett was famous for hiding his brushstrokes to create this incredibly smooth, almost photographic calmness. It's a perfect visual metaphor for peace returning after chaos, with tiny sailboats bravely venturing back out onto the tranquil sea.
