Foolish guillemot
1827-1838
John James Audubon captured the 'Foolish Guillemot' (now known as the Common Murre) in his monumental *The Birds of America*. Notice the bird on the left with its beak wide open—it looks like it's shouting at the ocean! Audubon was famous for depicting birds in dynamic, natural poses rather than stiff profiles. The name 'Foolish' comes from their lack of fear around humans, making them easy targets for hunters back in the day. This specific plate was engraved by Robert Havell in 1831, bringing Audubon's watercolors to life for wealthy subscribers.
