Hermit thrush
1827-1838
John James Audubon was famous for his dramatic, life-sized bird portraits, and this plate of the Hermit Thrush is a perfect example. He often shot birds and wired them into natural poses to capture their true essence, a rather gruesome method for such beautiful art. Published in his massive 'Birds of America' project, this hand-colored engraving shows the male and female thrush perched among berry-laden branches. The incredible detail in the feathers and the delicate berries highlights Audubon's obsession with capturing nature exactly as he saw it.
