John James Audubon was famous for his dramatic, almost theatrical bird poses. To achieve this lifelike look for the Hooded Warbler, he likely shot specimens and used wires to prop them up in natural positions before painting. This plate from his monumental 'Birds of America' series features both the male, sporting a striking black hood and yellow face, and the more subtly colored female. Printed by the renowned Havell studio in London around 1831, it captures the birds amidst their native flora, blending scientific accuracy with artistic flair.
