John James Audubon brought these tiny shorebirds to life in his monumental 'The Birds of America,' a massive project where he traveled the wilderness to sketch creatures in their natural habitats. Here, a male and female Piping Plover stand on a rugged, rocky coastline, with the male looking alert while the female peers down at the sand. Audubon insisted on drawing birds at life-size, which meant he had to get incredibly creative with the poses of larger birds, but for these delicate plovers, he captured their natural, unposed charm perfectly. This hand-colored engraving is a stunning example of 19th-century natural history illustration that helped shape how Americans viewed their own wildlife.
