John James Audubon

1827-1838

Saltimpalo pettogiallo by John James Audubon, 1827-1838

Audubon refused to draw boring, stiff birds; he wanted action! In this plate, the Yellow-breasted Chat is shown in a frantic family drama, with adults diving headfirst and hovering near a nest hidden in wild rose bushes. For nearly 200 years, scientists thought this bird was a warbler, but its unique behavior and voice finally earned it its own family classification in 2017. This print comes from his legendary 'Birds of America' series, famous for its life-sized depictions of American wildlife.
