Red Pagoda, Nikko by John La Farge, 1886

John La Farge captured this vibrant scene during his 1886 journey to Japan, a trip he took alongside historian Henry Adams that profoundly influenced American art. The striking red pagoda at Nikko seems to glow from within the dense, emerald forest, drawing the eye up the stone path where a lone figure in yellow stands. La Farge, a master of watercolor, used loose, fluid washes to depict the dappled sunlight filtering through the tall cedars, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. It’s a perfect snapshot of the 'Japonisme' craze, showing how Western artists completely fell in love with Eastern aesthetics and light.
