Pandemonium (Book 1, Line 710)
1824-1827
John Martin was the master of the 'sublime'—making viewers feel tiny and terrified—and this dramatic engraving of Pandemonium, the capital of Hell from Milton's Paradise Lost, is a perfect example. Look at those colossal, ziggurat-like towers looming in the darkness; they are so massive that the thousands of demons gathering below look like mere ants. In the foreground, a winged figure stands on a jagged cliff, surveying his gloomy empire. Martin created this series in the 1820s, and his intense use of light and shadow practically invented the look of modern sci-fi movie sets.
