Ichabod Crane Flying from the Headless Horseman
ca. 1828
Caught in a frantic gallop through a shadowy, gnarled forest, a terrified rider clings to his white horse in this dramatic scene. This is Ichabod Crane, fleeing for his life in a depiction of Washington Irving’s famous tale, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.' Artist John Quidor, who actually worked as a fireman in New York City, had a knack for capturing the eerie, humorous side of American folklore. The dark, moody atmosphere and the stark contrast of the white horse against the black woods perfectly capture the Romantic obsession with fear and the sublime power of nature.
