馬庫納加山景 by John Ruskin, 1845

Better known as the fierce defender of the Pre-Raphaelites, John Ruskin was also a prolific artist who traveled the Alps to capture their grandeur. This 1845 drawing of Macugnaga, an Italian Alpine village, showcases his meticulous eye for geological detail and atmospheric perspective. The rugged mountains fade into a misty distance, while rustic wooden cabins nestle in the foreground, grounding the majestic scene in human scale. Ruskin believed that observing nature was a spiritual act, and his detailed sketches like this one were often studies for his influential writings on art and architecture.
