시냇물과 초원
circa 1907
John Singer Sargent traded his famous society portraits for the great outdoors around 1907, capturing the shimmering magic of a rocky brook with incredible speed and confidence. You can almost feel the cool water rushing over the stones as he used brilliant, transparent washes to reveal the pebbled riverbed beneath the dark, rippling surface. These spontaneous watercolor sketches were his favorite way to relax, proving that the master of stiff, formal collars was equally brilliant at capturing wild, flowing nature without a single heavy brushstroke in sight.
