De Jérusalem
1905-6
John Singer Sargent traded his lucrative portrait commissions for a rugged adventure in the Middle East, capturing the sweeping, arid terrain surrounding Jerusalem around 1905. Notice how the vast, bruised-purple sky dominates the composition, pressing down on the golden, sun-baked hills and tiny white structures below. He used fluid washes and opaque white gouache to make those dramatic clouds practically glow against the hazy blue horizon. It’s a brilliant reminder that the man famous for painting high-society elites was equally masterful at capturing raw, untamed landscapes.
