Hombre y piscina, Florida
1917
John Singer Sargent is famous for painting stiff, wealthy society ladies, but this 1917 watercolor shows him completely letting loose during a trip to Florida. He captures a man lounging by a pool with quick, confident brushstrokes, using splashes of blue and earthy brown to evoke the heat and dappled light. After quitting formal portraiture, Sargent treated these travel sketches as a private playground, free from the demands of clients. It’s a vibrant snapshot of an artist just enjoying the act of painting.
