Mrs. Thayer’s Garden, Massachusetts
ca. 1885
John Singer Sargent is famous for painting the ultra-rich in stiff, fancy clothes, but this piece shows his fun, breezy side. Created around 1885 while visiting friends in Massachusetts, it depicts a sun-drenched garden path lined with terracotta pots. Though Sargent had strict Academic training, here he uses loose watercolor washes to capture the dappled light filtering through the trees. Notice how he leaves the paper white in the center? That’s the blinding summer sun hitting the walkway, proving he was a master of capturing atmosphere, not just faces.
