On the Verandah
1920
John Singer Sargent captures a lazy summer afternoon in this breezy watercolor, where four figures lounge on a shaded porch. The artist, famous for his society portraits, seems to have relaxed his own style here, using loose, fluid washes to depict friends knitting, smoking, and reading in the dappled light. The inscription at the bottom reveals it was a gift to his friend Dwight Blaney, adding a personal touch to this snapshot of Edwardian leisure. It's a wonderful example of how Sargent mastered the watercolor medium later in his career, moving away from stiff oil portraits to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere.
