Passo del Sempione
1911
John Singer Sargent traded his glamorous society portraits for the rugged outdoors when he painted this Alpine scene in 1911. The Simplon Pass, a treacherous mountain route between Switzerland and Italy, is captured here with energetic, thick brushstrokes that make the rushing water and jagged boulders feel almost alive. While famous for his polished portraits, Sargent's later landscape sketches reveal a wilder, more spontaneous side of the artist, showing how he loved to capture the raw power of nature while traveling.
