Spanish Church Interior
c. 1880
Before he became the ultimate portraitist of the Gilded Age, John Singer Sargent was a restless traveler capturing the world in quick, brilliant watercolor sketches. This moody scene of a Spanish church interior feels like you're stumbling into a secret, quiet moment. Notice how the dark, heavy arches frame that distant, glowing altar? It's almost spooky, but also peaceful. Sargent was a master of capturing light and shadow, and here he uses deep, murky blues and blacks to make the few touches of gold and red on the altar pop like a candle in the dark.
