Summit of Bernina Pass
1869
Before he became the ultimate society portraitist painting wealthy elites, a young John Singer Sargent was busy capturing the raw beauty of the Swiss Alps. This sweeping watercolor of the Bernina Pass shows his incredible eye for light and atmosphere, using soft washes of purple and ochre to make the distant peaks feel miles away. If you look closely at the bottom right, you can spot tiny figures trekking along the path, emphasizing just how massive and humbling nature is compared to us.
