ベンジャミン・ピックマン by John Singleton Copley, ca. 1758-61

John Singleton Copley captured the swagger of colonial America perfectly in this portrait of wealthy Salem merchant Benjamin Pickman. Dressed in a sharp brown coat with flashy gold buttons and a bold red waistcoat, Pickman leans casually against a table, looking every bit the confident young elite of the 1760s. Copley, a self-taught prodigy who would later flee to London during the Revolutionary War, had a genius for making his subjects look both realistic and incredibly stylish. The way Pickman casually tucks his hand into his pocket while resting the other on a heavy book shows off a relaxed authority that was very much in vogue for the time.
