ハリソン・グレイ
c. 1767
John Singleton Copley captured the wealthy Boston merchant Harrison Gray in this striking 1767 portrait, showing him mid-thought with a quill pen and paper in hand. Notice the incredible detail in his rich brown coat and those shiny gold buttons—Copley was a master at making fabric look so real you could almost touch it. As one of colonial America's most celebrated painters, Copley used this hyper-realistic style to boost the social status of his wealthy clients right before the Revolutionary War changed everything.
