Brigadier General John Glover
1794
This delicate graphite sketch captures Brigadier General John Glover, the 'Marblehead Mariner' whose regiment of fishermen famously ferried George Washington across the icy Delaware River. Drawn by John Trumbull in 1794 during a visit to Massachusetts, the portrait shows Glover in his military coat, looking off into the distance with a serious expression. Trumbull, known as the 'painter of the revolution,' created this study late in Glover's life, preserving the likeness of a man who helped save the Continental Army from disaster more than once.
