General Andrew Jackson
ca. 1819
Here stands Andrew Jackson looking every bit the war hero in his dark blue general's uniform, complete with flashy gold epaulettes. Painted around 1819 by John Wesley Jarvis, this portrait captures the man just after he became a national celebrity for winning the Battle of New Orleans. Notice the white horse peeking out from the rocky background? It adds a dramatic touch, perhaps hinting at the famous moment when two horses were shot out from under him during battle. Jarvis was the go-to painter for War of 1812 heroes, using a Neoclassical style to make Jackson look like 'Old Hickory'—tough, unyielding, and ready for action.
