José Guadalupe Posada

Llamada a comer by José Guadalupe Posada

Rooted in a gritty realism, this illustration by José Guadalupe Posada offers a satirical glimpse into military life long before he became famous for his Day of the Dead skeletons. Two figures are shown hauling a massive cooking pot on a pole, serving up the 'rancho' (military stew) referenced in the Spanish poem below. The text playfully mocks the 'scoundrels of the barracks,' warning them that while dinner is served now, the coming war will force them to 'twist' and suffer. Posada was a master of the broadside—cheap, mass-produced prints that commented on politics and daily life for the everyday Mexican citizen.
