Politics by José Guadalupe Posada

José Guadalupe Posada was the undisputed master of the 'calavera'—skeletal figures that danced, drank, and mercilessly mocked the living. In this satirical illustration, a tiny, lonely skeleton accompanies a poem roasting a political 'leader' who boasts about jumping at any opportunity, painted or not, and leaving his rivals in the dust. Posada used these witty, bony characters to criticize corrupt politicians and social elites in Mexico during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His mass-produced prints became a cornerstone of Mexican graphic art and deeply influenced later giants like Diego Rivera.
