Il Vescovo
Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada pokes fun at the clergy with this simple line drawing of a bishop looking rather self-important in his tall mitre and spectacles. Below the sketch, a satirical poem twists the Latin phrase for 'remember you will die' into a biting joke about getting fat and turning a deaf ear to the world's problems. Posada was famous for his broadsides—cheap prints sold in markets—that used humor to critique society, eventually inspiring the famous 'Day of the Dead' imagery and artists like Diego Rivera.
