The Jurist
Here we see a tiny, solitary lawyer standing in a sea of pink, looking rather important with his book and robes. This is a satirical print by the legendary Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada, who used realistic depictions of everyday figures to mock society. The Spanish poem at the bottom translates to a biting joke: the law dispenses justice, but only if you have a penny in your pocket! It’s a classic example of Posada’s work for cheap broadsides, using humor to critique the corruption of the Porfiriato era in Mexico.
