Sunset in the Gulf of Carthage
1897
Most people know Josef Hoffmann as the geometric master of Art Nouveau, but this 1897 watercolor reveals his softer, romantic side. Titled 'Sunset in the Gulf of Carthage,' the piece captures a tranquil North African seascape where the sky melts into pastel pinks and greys above a distant, purple mountain range. The delicate washes of color and the handwritten inscription in the corner suggest this was a personal travel sketch, created long before he became famous for his stark modernist designs and the Wiener Werkstätte.
