A Great Tree
ca. 1796
Look at this massive, twisting tree! Young J.M.W. Turner created this around 1796, long before he became famous for his fiery, abstract sunsets. Notice the tiny figures sitting at the base of the trunk? That's a classic Romantic trick to show just how small humans are compared to the wild, untamed power of nature. The gnarled branches reach out like giant fingers against a moody sky, proving that even early in his career, Turner was a master of capturing the dramatic soul of the landscape.
