Marine Dabblers
19th century
Before he became the master of swirling light and stormy seas, J.M.W. Turner created this charming scene of coastal life in 1812. A group of barefoot boys, the 'marine dabblers,' are intensely focused on launching a toy boat, oblivious to the massive, dark-hulled ships looming behind them. In the background, adult sailors wade into the choppy water, highlighting the contrast between innocent play and the hard labor of the sea. The text at the bottom reveals Turner etched the original design himself before W. Say engraved it, showing his hands-on approach to printmaking.
