Oberwesel

Oberwesel by Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1840

Turner took us on a dreamy trip down the Rhine River in 1840 with this breathtaking view of Oberwesel. Notice how the tiny figures in the foreground—resting mothers, playing children, and working villagers—seem completely dwarfed by the massive, misty mountains and that glowing river stretching into infinity. He used his signature hazy style to make the landscape feel almost magical, like a memory rather than a photograph. It's a perfect example of the Romantic movement, where nature was the ultimate superstar and human life was just a small, peaceful part of the grand scenery.
