The Leader Sea-piece
19th century
J.M.W. Turner was absolutely obsessed with the raw power of the ocean, and you can see that passion here in this dramatic 1809 seascape. Originally created as a sketch for a painting commissioned by a patron named W. Leader—giving the piece its name—the print captures a moment of high tension on the water. A massive three-masted ship battles the swell on the right, while a smaller vessel on the left leans precariously, looking like it might capsize at any second. The churning waves and ominous, swirling clouds are classic examples of the Romantic movement's love for nature's terrifying beauty.
