Joseph Stella

Long before Joseph Stella was painting the electric energy of the Brooklyn Bridge, he was down in the dark, documenting the human cost of America's industrial boom. These two faces—haunted, hollow-cheeked, and staring into the distance—are coal miners from Pennsylvania, rendered with a raw intensity that makes you almost feel the soot on their skin. Stella was part of a wave of artists who wanted to show the 'real' America, focusing on immigrants and laborers rather than high society. It’s a moody, powerful snapshot of a man who would soon trade these dark, heavy shadows for the bright, jagged lines of Futurism.
