Glass and Water Bottle

Glass and Water Bottle by Juan Gris, 1917

Juan Gris takes everyday objects—a glass and a water bottle—and shatters them into a geometric dance of browns, blacks, and creams. This is a classic example of Synthetic Cubism from 1917, where the artist builds up the image from flat, overlapping shapes rather than trying to paint a realistic 3D scene. Notice how the black, curvy shape on the right hints at a bottle's silhouette? Gris was known as the 'intellectual' of the Cubist movement, bringing a crisp, mathematical precision to the style pioneered by his neighbor, Pablo Picasso.
