The Dwarfs

The Dwarfs by Juan Gris

Before he became a heavyweight of Cubism, Juan Gris made his living drawing witty caricatures for Parisian magazines. In this illustration, titled 'Les Nains' (The Dwarfs), he plays with scale and social status in a hilarious way. Two towering women sport hats so large they look like landing pads, looming over a tiny, top-hatted gentleman who seems delighted by the attention. Meanwhile, a tall, gloomy figure in the background watches the scene, creating a perfect satire of early 20th-century fashion and the absurdity of high society.
