Jules Bastien-Lepage didn't just paint farmers; he painted the sweat and soil of rural France in 1878. Here, a young woman pauses during the potato harvest, her face showing the heavy toll of the work as she dumps her basket into a sack. The artist used a style called Naturalism to capture the scene with almost photographic detail, from the dirt on their aprons to the dramatic, cloudy sky overhead. It was a radical departure from the pretty, idealized country scenes popular at the time, and today this powerful tribute to working-class life resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
