Marshland by Jules Dupré, 1860s-1870s

Look up at that sky! Jules Dupré lets the weather completely steal the show in this moody marshland scene, dedicating nearly two-thirds of the canvas to a swirling, turbulent canopy of clouds. Down below, a scattered herd of cattle grazes peacefully, seemingly dwarfed by the dramatic, ochre-tinted atmosphere of the French countryside. As a key figure in the Barbizon School and Romanticism, Dupré was obsessed with capturing the raw, emotional power of nature, paving the way for the Impressionists who would soon follow.
