The Apple Basket
1919
Before Julio González became the famous sculptor who taught Picasso how to weld metal, he was capturing quiet rural life with soft, grainy pastels. In this 1919 scene, a woman in a blue blouse bends over large baskets overflowing with green harvest, while a ladder leans against a tree in the background. Although often associated with Cubism—a movement he would later explore deeply with his iron constructions—this piece feels much more gentle and atmospheric. It offers a rare glimpse into the artist's early days, long before he started hammering metal into the abstract, jagged faces he is best known for today.
