Santo Onofre by Jusepe de Ribera, 1643

Jusepe de Ribera brings us face-to-face with Saint Onophrius, a legendary desert hermit who supposedly lived to be a hundred years old surviving on nothing but dates and water. Notice the incredible, almost gritty texture of the saint's weathered skin and wild hair; Ribera was a master of the Baroque style, using dramatic lighting to highlight the raw reality of holy figures rather than idealizing them. The emaciated saint clutches a wooden rosary and wears a garment of palm leaves, gazing upward with tear-filled, reddened eyes that suggest a moment of intense spiritual ecstasy. Even though he spent most of his career in Italy, Ribera proudly signed this work as 'español' (Spanish), reminding viewers of his roots while delivering a masterclass in realistic, unglamorous sanctity.
