聖奧努弗里烏斯 by Jusepe de Ribera, 1620s

Jusepe de Ribera wasn't interested in painting pretty, perfect saints; he wanted you to feel their suffering. Here, Saint Onuphrius—a hermit who supposedly lived naked in the Egyptian desert—is depicted as a bony, weathered old man clutching a rosary. The dramatic lighting, known as tenebrism, spotlights his emaciated ribs and desperate upward gaze against a pitch-black background. This Baroque masterpiece proves that holiness doesn't require a six-pack, just a lot of faith and very little food.
