Oharame

Katsushika Hokusai

1829

Oharame by Katsushika Hokusai, 1829

Hokusai captures a moment of rural labor with surprising elegance in this 1829 print. An Oharame—a woman from the village of Ohara famous for hauling firewood to Kyoto—strides forward leading an ox laden with a massive bundle of brushwood. Despite the heavy load, she looks poised in her patterned blue kimono and red sleeves, almost as if she's on a leisurely stroll rather than a hard day's work. The calligraphy floating in the sky is a kyoka poem, a witty verse often commissioned by poetry clubs for these luxury prints known as surimono.
