Katsushika Hokusai

1816

후지산 by Katsushika Hokusai, 1816

Before he became the master of the Great Wave, Hokusai filled pages of sketchbooks known as 'Hokusai Manga' with everything from fighting samurai to sleepy cats. This serene double-page spread features Mount Fuji looming large over a line of pine trees and choppy water. The vertical line down the center reveals this was originally a book spread, meant to be viewed across two pages. The delicate pink wash at the bottom adds a dreamy, sunrise quality to the scene, showcasing Hokusai's incredible eye for landscape composition long before his most famous masterpieces.
